Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
Together is a God concept. Our world is self obsessed.
Ruth wasn’t even Hebrew. Moabites were their enemy. Moab was Lot’s son. They asked Balaam to curse Israel. Subject to Moab for 18 years. They worshipped Chemosh the destroyer. Practiced child sacrifices.
Naomi went to live in enemy territory. They assimilated well enough they married there. Before long disaster struck – husband and sons die.
Left in famine, now Naomi would return with even less.
So it seemed.
Naomi returns with Ruth – a woman who has pledged to be together no matter what.
Together is self sacrifice.
Ruth 1:16-17 But Ruth replied, “Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back. Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. Wherever you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord punish me severely if I allow anything but death to separate us!”
What Ruth says is radical. Denies self.
We think Together is about compromise. This is not a statement of compromise.
Together is determination
David was determined to fight Goliath. Saul wasn’t determined to wait.
Genesis 32:24-26 This left Jacob all alone in the camp, and a man came and wrestled with him until the dawn began to break. When the man saw that he would not win the match, he touched Jacob’s hip and wrenched it out of its socket. Then the man said, “Let me go, for the dawn is breaking!” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”
Outlast. Fight for your marriage. It wasn’t ideal for Ruth either. Your marriage isn’t perfect. Your job isn’t great. Your children are rebellious. Your finances are out of control. The addiction grips you. Don’t give up.
Epaphroditus had to travel 1300km. Probably took six weeks to three months. He didn’t give up. He nearly died. Yet he completed the task.
Together is the beginning of blessing
It was the beginning of harvest.
When you pledge to be together, harvest starts.
Harvest culminates in birth, redemption, second chances, restoration, new beginnings.
Ruth 4:13 Then Boaz took responsibility of Ruth, and they married. After they came together, Ruth conceived by the Eternal’s provision, and later she gave birth to a son.
