I wonder if there is some situation in your life you didn’t handle very well. Perhaps the way you raised your children? Perhaps your spouse. Your job. Parents. Sibling.
Moses did the right thing the wrong way – he didn’t handle it – and that’s why he was in the desert, not the palace.
God shows Moses how to handle it. God wants you to know you can handle it.
Exodus 4:1 But Moses protested again, “What if they won’t believe me or listen to me? What if they say, ‘The Lord never appeared to you’?”
What if?? Steven Furtick calls it fear’s greatest hit: what if…
What if they? Who are they?
They are the Hebrews who rejected him the first time.
“I tried it. It didn’t work. They rejected me. They didn’t believe me then. What’s so different about now?”
Exodus 4:2 Then the Lord asked him, “What is that in your hand?” “A shepherd’s staff,” Moses replied.
What you need is in your hand.
Moses sees a staff. What have you got? Broken marriage, broken dreams, revolting kids, bad health.
Learn how to handle it.
Exodus 4:3 “Throw it down on the ground,” the Lord told him. So Moses threw down the staff, and it turned into a snake! Moses jumped back.
Gods way of handling things isn’t like yours.
Moses threw it down and it became something he feared.
“God, I couldn’t possibly handle any more, I’m just so busy.”
Busy is running. Busy is mishandling what God wants you to handle. If you handled things God’s way, you wouldn’t be stressed. It would be handled.
Exodus 4:4 Then the Lord told him, “Reach out and grab its tail.” So Moses reached out and grabbed it, and it turned back into a shepherd’s staff in his hand.
God says pick it up by the tail.
We want to grab things by the head. We want to be in control. If I pick it up by the tail, I’m going to get bitten again. Hurt again.
God wants to be in control. Trust God.
You can do all things through Christ. You have to stretch out your hand and pick it up. You have grab it by the tail. It will only change when you handle it. As long as you look at it, as long as you pray about it, it won’t change. Handle it.
Take the fear of rejection. Take the fear of what will happen to your children. Take the fear of getting hurt again. Stop running from it – handle it.
Here is why God wants you to take it by the tail – He’s already crushed the head. He has dealt with it. You don’t have to be afraid. You don’t have to be full of fear. Handle it, He’s handled it.
If Moses kept running from the staff, he never would have seen what the staff could do in his hand. He never would have seen it turn the Nile into blood. Infest it with frogs. He never would have seen it part the sea. He never would have seen it defeat the Amalekites. He never would have seen it bring water out of a rock.
Handle your problems, handle your fear, handle the issue – you can handle it.
